While it may not do enough to make for a groundbreaking experience, its mix of elements has charm, though you’ll likely need to be ready to grind

While the Switch has quite a few RPGs that are epic in their story and scope, featuring impressive graphics and sometimes intricate combat, there’s plenty of room in the eShop for some variety as well. Similar to some other Inti Creates titles before this one, there’s just something different about Kingdom’s Return that has some charm. If you’re looking for something a little less encumbered by storylines, featuring more of an action focus, and some elements that help make the overall experience feel more unique, this may be your speed.

Featuring a choice of 4 pretty different heroes to play with, a knight, a wizard, a potion-chucking alchemist, and a dual-blade wielding warrior, you can pretty much pick the one whose style suits you the best, and each of them play quite differently. Taking on quests for the local people in your town, you’ll venture off to battle monsters, collecting resources and gold along the way while building up your character of choice, though you will have the option to change characters as well if you’d like. For the most part once you get the hang of how your specific class plays, you should get pretty good at knocking out most enemies, but if you’re not careful and take on a few at a time you can absolutely get yourself into trouble. As you build experience you’ll then get points you can use to upgrade your character, to help make them a bit more formidable and perhaps further tune them to fit your play style as well.

There are some areas that feel like they could use a little work though, and one of those is in helping the player understand what it is they’re doing, why, and how to be a bit more effective. Some guidance on using your class wheel to upgrade your character, how to make the most of building and making use of structures in your town, and just some simple fundamentals would be helpful. You do get some basic guidance on your characters’ skills, but rather than just having some text in the upper-right corner a little more introduction to get you acclimated would have been nice. The bigger problem though, is that even while the typical combat may not be terribly hard, the boss battles, by comparison, feel a bit harsh. I didn’t so much struggle with fighting and working through their attack patterns as get frustrated by their pretty ridiculous health, making some battles feel overly long and designed to simply whittle you down. The ideas for something fun are there, but it just feels a little incomplete and unpolished, with room to better assist players in getting on board, and enjoying this generally light mix of city building and action.
