  • While it’s hardly a fishing sim, there’s plenty of simple family-friendly arcade action to be had here

Walking into this game I didn’t know what to expect, and hoping to finally see a decent fishing game on the platform I was initially disappointed. That said, while this is a decidedly lighter, simpler, and much more family-oriented title than expected… but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. What’s difficult to do is to try to nail down precisely what this collection of many different parts is. There’s a “story mode” that will typically challenge you to beat the clock and deliver specific types of fish, an arcade-inspired main fishing mode with loads of stages and equipment to unlock, a collection of mini games to enjoy with friends or against the AI, and a weirdly addicting shark coin pusher mode as well. Now, on the downside I will say that the combination of insistence on motion controls and not always clearly explaining how best to play is frustrating, though with some experimentation you do work things out. Its scattershot and simpler nature also may be less appetizing to more experienced gamers. All that said, as a pretty wide collection of content that can be enjoyed by younger or more casual gamers it’s a nice bundle of surprises.
