Another multiplayer game, whether locally or online, that fails to stand out from its peers
When it comes to genre and gameplay styles that are over-represented on the Switch, multiplayer action titles are among the most obvious. True, the Switch was designed for local multiplayer play in particular, but that doesn’t help explain the abundance of these games that, on the whole, fail to do much to differentiate themselves from one another.Anarkade is the latest such title, allowing you to mix it up against up to 3 friends or some bots, whether locally or online (if you happen to run into anyone playing it). Initially armed with just a double jump, simple pistol, and your melee sword attack, your goal is to take out the competition before they get you. Power-ups will appear periodically in the form of crates, and while not every weapon or perk they give you will be worth the risk, if you pick up a gatling gun or rocket launcher you’ll be sure to create some commotion. The issue here isn’t necessarily the quality of the play, which is at least decent, it’s that there are at least a dozen games you could pretty well describe identically already out there. It does check the boxes for fulfilling the mandatory minimum features for such a game, but there’s no spark of interest or fun here, it’s simply more of the same, playing adequately but also easily forgettable.
