A follow-up to the charming and weird original adventure to the that continues in fine form
When it comes to games that I bumped into early on in the Switch’s lifespan that felt memorable in some way, it’s easy for me to return to Bulb Boy. While not the most unusual or the best game I played many years ago, its unusual visual style, quirky puzzles, and generally innocently fun (but weird) nature really stuck with me. When I heard word last year that he would be making his return in a new adventure, I was excited to see what surprises the folks at Bulbware would have in store. The good news is that, overall, the original’s unusual visual style, oddball sense of humor, and generally inventive puzzles are back. If you were lucky enough to enjoy some cartoons in the 90s the likes of Ren & Stimpy and some others, which featured unique grotesque art at times, you should absolutely love the intricate and plain yucky close-ups you’ll sometimes get here. While perhaps some could call the adventure horror-oriented in some way, I was generally too busy just enjoying the funkiness of it all to get worried with labels. The one area where that art style and quirky nature can spell trouble, is with its puzzles. To their credit, the developers have come up with all sorts of weird ideas, and once you understand what you’re doing the solutions to some of your problems can be amusingly inventive. That said, the lack of familiarity in what you’re seeing and what you may be meant to be doing can also be an obstacle. More than once I would understand what I’d ultimately need to do, and even have some of the means to do it, but it turned out that I needed to do something else, or trigger some other element first before my end goal could be realized. This is by no means a crippling problem, since with patience you can still work things out, but it can be aggravating nonetheless. I’d say the only other issue would be that, similar to the original (but at least a little longer this time), it’s over too soon, but the experience does feel appropriate to the price point at least. I do hope to see another adventure a little sooner next time, not needing to wait for another new system to release before it comes out.
