Not a bad bit of fun for retro platforming enthusiasts, with a few novel touches that help it shine
C.A.R.L. is one of those games that sort of sneaks up on you with its fun, something I’d consider a bit of a bold choice these days since attention spans tend to be short if you can’t hook people quickly enough. To start it’s a pretty standard classic platformer where you’ll be challenged to work out how to get through the level alive, avoiding traps, shooting some enemies, and keeping on the look-out for hidden secrets. Not too far in, though, things step up a little bit with you acquiring new powers and moves, and then having the game’s stages and level of challenge crank up a few degrees to go with it. The result is what looks and usually feels like a classic retro title, but remixed a bit with some modern flair, sensibilities, and challenge level. It may not exude an aura of thrills with its more basic look and concept, but it delivers some value added goodness to justify a look if this sort of thing is a fit for your gaming tastes.
