This spiritual successor to the classic Strider, released for the first time on console, has flair but lacks its own distinct identity
For old-school arcade fans the name Strider should at least be somewhat familiar, as it was a game that simply did things its own way, looked pretty incredible, and consistently threw surprises your way. Cannon Dancer, which is apparently intended to be Strider’s follow-up, absolutely captures many of those same qualities. In fact, perhaps too many of them and too completely if I’m being honest. If I didn’t walk into playing this without being told it had an actual connection to Strider I would have assumed it was simply a knock-off, as it shares so much with the title it trends towards feeling derivative. Now, if that sounds great to you, or you don’t mind challenging (but not always particularly balanced) classic arcade play, it may be a big hit. For anyone without that hook I wouldn’t say it’s as clearly a winner though.
