A hectic bit of arcade action and fun, but not quite as refined as some of its peers
As a self-proclaimed vintage gamer who grew up in the arcades, this generation has been truly remarkable with how much it has embraced that era. Whether it's outright ports of classic arcade titles, or new games that manage to recapture the challenges and fun of those days, it’s a good time to be a fan of retro gaming. Cash Cow DX may not be quite as easily accessible and fun as some of its peers, but it still feels imbued with that classic arcade flavor nonetheless.Feeling like it is mixing together elements of generally lesser-known titles like Mappy, City Connection, and a few others, the action can be hectic, and you’ll have to keep an eye out for arrows that act as enemy indicators to try to help keep yourself alive. On each level the primary goal is to collect all of the cash, which will complete the stage, but moving between all of the platforms effectively to get it all can be tricky. Aside from being worried with the handful of enemies you’ll need to contend with, elements like ramps and trampolines will need to be taken into account as you try to plot out your path to get to each platform to get all of the loot.In terms of some shortcomings when contrasted with its peers, the play feels a bit more one-dimensional overall than is typical. While it has a colorful look and some elements like loops add some fun flair, the stages are lacking in the personality of some better titles out there. Throw in the fact that it can be pretty hard at times, especially since it can be tough to spot your enemies to your sides when you’re moving quickly as the screen scrolls, and it’s a little tough to love.
