When you try to blatantly rip off an arcade classic, you should at least put in a bit more effort…
It has always been said that there’s a fine line between paying homage to something that’s revered and ripping it off. The developers behind Chipmonk very obviously have a great deal of admiration for the arcade (and home) Sega classic Golden Axe. Unfortunately, they apparently love it so much that they’ve essentially decided to roughly reskin it (poorly at that, keeping in mind this is a game many decades old) and call it a day. Down to the highly exploitable reverse attack move mechanically this is pretty well a match, there’s no mistaking the interludes where you’ll attack fast-moving enemies to get power and health, and just overall the core experience feels like a bit of a carbon copy. Except they also managed to lose some of the elements and nuance that made it the classic it is. Not to be a retro snob but while there have been other games that have aped many elements of this series, I can’t recall any doing it both this blatantly and poorly.
