There can be a novel flow to play, mixing twin-stick shooting with an ability to redirect incoming fire, but it’s a rough ride
With an abundance of excellent twin-stick shooters of all sorts on the Switch, breaking into the space and making a big splash is undoubtedly a challenge. Deflector, to its credit, at least seems to be aware of this as it tries to put a bit of a creative foot forward by adding a redirect mechanic to the mix, meaning that aside from shooting enemies with your guns there’s also a component of you using solid timing to put up your shields and deflect enemy fire back at them. This system can get a bit of a super-charge even as you’ll have upgrade options as you go that are focused on you doing this effectively, providing an alternative to simply trying to upgrade your weapons. There’s no doubt this has a unique edge, but I also felt like it struggled to be engaging, even while demanding a little more coordination than usual. The effort is there, for me it just didn’t rise to the level of excitement and interest that I’d hoped for.
