While more manageable with the touchscreen, playing with a controller is a cumbersome mess, and the more web-based style it uses feels a bit dated
One of the challenges when you’re dealing with such a versatile system as the Switch is whether you’ll support all of its varied control schemes, and then if you do, how much effort you’ll put into them. Certainly the release of the Switch 2 has muddied the waters further with its mouse control support, which is absolutely an interesting choice to have but also may not be the scheme you target as your priority since it may not be very practical for everyone who wants to play. I’ll even admit that as someone who plays mostly in docked mode with a Pro Controller, I almost take it as a personal affront when they aren’t supported. For me, Food Truck Chef is an excellent example of a title that plays reasonably well one way, but pretty horribly in another, making it much tougher to score.Starting with what works, if what you’ve been looking for is a touchscreen-driven affair, more like playing on a tablet or your phone, it works reasonably well. This is a game built on fast turn-arounds of orders, and the ability to just quickly tap and drag things across the screen makes it pretty fun and approachable. If you were looking for something to play docked, or at least using a controller in any way, it’s an entirely different experience unfortunately, far more frustrating and awkward as you try to navigate through by highlighting what you want to press and moving from there. To further add to your problems, it’s an issue that gets worse with time as you add more stations and items that you’re trying to deal with, creating far too many opportunities for mistakes or simply getting stuck because you can’t efficiently get to what you want, as the game thinks you mean to choose something else. The thing is, even if you play it the more ideal way with the touchscreen there’s something very dated about the style of play, unable to shake the feeling of this being made for the web or mobile, and just having been ported to the Switch without the necessary effort to make it rise to the occasion. Given the fact that there are a number of cooking titles out there that range from full-on work sims, to simply being built to test your speed and more, this may be a workable title you’d like to use the touch controls more casually, but it does little to nothing terribly interesting either.
