While it has obviously been inspired by Star Fox in its overall design and play style, it’s also a bit short and is quirky at times
Although the later versions of the series have not been as well-received, the original Star Fox and Star Fox 64 were both excellent shooters with a unique visual style and gameplay. Despite being on rails, the combination of enemy attacks and gates to fly through created a satisfying challenge. Surprisingly, there haven't been many attempts to capture the elements that made those games successful, and FUR Squadron helps to demonstrate why to some degree. One issue with FUR Squadron is that it directly copies many elements from Star Fox, particularly in terms of characters and visuals, inviting direct comparisons to the classic Nintendo title. This is not a wise strategy when competing with a beloved series. Additionally, while the game is set in a simulation, it suffers from occasional wonkiness that is unclear whether it is intentional or a bug. For example, columns sometimes fall over only to suddenly pop back up, which can be jarring. The wireframe visual style, while consistent with the simulation setting, can sometimes cause problems with depth perception, leading to frustration. Finally, the game lacks a satisfying amount of content, so even if players enjoy the experience offered, it’s short-lived.Overall, FUR Squadron is not a terrible game, and its uniqueness may appeal to some players who’ve been looking for a hit of that classic style of play. If you are aware of its flaws and are still interested in trying it, it may not disappoint. However, it is unlikely to satisfy a general audience just looking for an exciting and engaging experience.
