A few generations ago it could have made a bit more sense, but it's very retro look and bland play don’t hold up now at all
Sometimes there are games that come along that are simply a bit baffling. Granted, in the case of Gastro Force (and others like it) you could argue its being budget-friendly gives it a bit of a pass, but this is a packed-to-the-gills eShop that regularly has hot games of all types for $5 or less, so that doesn’t really hold water. What you have here is an oddly old-school first-person shooter, not just in overall retro pixel looks but also in its bland level design, dull and generally predictable weaponry, and thoroughly underwhelming play. Where things really hit hard is the realization that games I was playing 30 or more years ago like DOOM, Duke Nukem, or even more off-the-beaten-path titles like Rise of the Triad were all far more dynamic, interesting, and exciting. Heck, even some of its low-budget indie contemporaries at least have felt a bit less by-the-numbers or dull stuck in corridors, at least attempting to do things that are unexpected. In the end, this unfortunately just feels entirely too safe and ho-hum for its own good.
