While it has a great retro look and sound, the slippery surfaces and ineffective attack make this for people seeking punishment only
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with games that up the ante in terms of a challenge and expect that you’re ready to make a sustained effort in order to beat them. My issue is with games like Gimmick that feel like they’ve stacked the deck against you in ways that feel a bit cheap and even cruel. The bones of Gimmick are actually pretty solid, between a great old-school retro look and a solid soundtrack, but it’s the aggravating gameplay-oriented decisions the people behind it made that are a bit confounding. The first is that your attack is pretty challenging to make effective use of with the way it gets thrown, but the real kicker is that all of the platforms you’ll be jumping onto (many of them angled) feel like they’re from an ice stage in some other game. The slippery nature that you’re expected to compensate for entirely too often quickly makes simple survival feel a bit like a chore, and while challenge hounds may gird their loins and dig the way the cards are stacked against them, pretty well everyone else will want to steer clear.
