  • The cast of fighters definitely has personality, but this marriage of rhythm and fighting games doesn’t go the distance

Given what continues to feel like an overall lack of compelling indie fighting games, though there are at least a few, I’m always intrigued to see new ones arrive. Given the fact that God of Rock has opted to go the route of pairing the fighting with a rhythm game at its base, in theory that should set it up for some success since that automatically makes it a unicorn within the space. The problem ends up being that this marriage of two very different genres simply isn’t harmonious at all, but that isn’t to say with some help it couldn’t improve. For instance, the character design and the concept of layering special moves into the mix aren’t bad. Fighters should have some personality and the game manages that well. In terms of the special moves those are somewhat synonymous with fighters, and the fact that they use classic sweeping motions is a nice nod. For me the issues almost entirely revolve around the way the tracks are isolated at the bottom of the screen while the fighting is at the top, and with the sometimes quite difficult to pull off button combos you’re expected to pull off you really can’t take anything in. More often than not you’re simply trying to keep up, randomly throwing special moves, and hoping for the best. Not only can this be unsatisfying, if you really put your all into it your hand can get a bit crampy as you try to figure out what unholy way to best hold it to allow you to use more than just your right thumb to press the face buttons. Throw it all together and while there’s some spectacle the overall experience suffers quite a bit.
