An exceedingly-basic puzzle idea that really fails to get out of the starting gate with any real variety

While I always try to keep an open and positive mind for the indie games I play, I’ll admit that there are times where I simply can’t follow what the thought process behind a release was. Whether the issue is tied to too much complexity, poor execution, or concepts that don’t quite come together, there are plenty of ways titles can end up being disappointing. In the case of Gridz Keeper though, the problem is that everything about it is just far too simple, making the entire experience pretty repetitive and simply dull.

The idea here is that you’re in charge of the power grid, in what very weakly appears to be the zombie apocalypse. In order to keep people safe, you’ll need to keep everything operating at peak power, but to do so you’ll need to honor the rule that when you turn any given generator off or on, any adjacent ones will also be triggered to alternate their status as well, creating the puzzle dilemma you’ll be looking to solve. This sort of puzzle isn’t that uncommon as a one-off in other games, but in this case that’s the only idea in town, and unfortunately it started to show signs of issues pretty quickly.

Quite simply, there’s just not enough variety here to be of much interest, and far too many levels will see you locking into the same patterns over and over again. Many times I’d find myself getting into streaks, just blowing through several stages in a row because the layouts weren’t that different and I was ultimately applying the same solution pattern to each one. Given the fact that there are only 50 stages included as it is, that ends up making it feel like there simply aren’t that many unique layouts to work out the solutions for, making the exercise pretty underwhelming. The fact that the game has so few total assets and does nothing of note with its own setting and theme just underlines that problem, making the whole effort feel lackluster, especially with so many superior options out there in the eShop.
