OK, so going the retro route to make modern games that capture the look and essence of playing games on platforms like the Gameboy is a thing. I get that. When you first start up Gunpowder on the Teeth it just feels like a classic run and gun with a washed out all-grey color palette. Maybe it’s not a look for everyone, but if you don’t mind it the action can still deliver some fun. But then you start dying for reasons that can be highly frustrating and/or annoying. You see, with the limitations of the available colors there are times where it is damned hard to see enemies, see their bullets, see barbed wire that will cut you up if you hit it wrong… and that gets irritating. Sure, you can understand where things are and what to do through sheer repetition but that feels like an extremely sloppy problem to have, and for me it really brings the game down a notch.
