While it has a budget-friendly method of allowing for co-op play with only 1 copy of the game the experience isn’t always great
It’s kind of odd how in just the past few months there have been quite a number of co-op games that have relied on each person being in their own environments and needing to work together and communicate to be successful. That’s kind of where the problems begin for How 2 Escape though, because it means there are a number of games to compare it to, and in some key areas it struggles. Now, one plus it has on its side is that you can play with just 1 copy of the game on your Switch, with the other player working from a mobile phone app they can download and then get on the same page you’re on without needing to be connected directly in any way. That said, you’ll absolutely want and need to at least be on the phone together (if not in the same room) since very effective communication is essential for success. Where my wife and I found some frustration was with some of the ambiguity we found in the puzzles and clues, especially since within either environment it wasn’t always clear how you were supposed to perform certain tasks. More annoying was that when we went to use the in-game hint system to help get us out of a jam, even when getting all 3 clues involving a particular puzzle we learned little to nothing of value. In most cases we’d actually already figured out what they were pointing to, but sadly that also didn’t help us much getting over the hump of figuring out the solution to the puzzle. Considering there are comparable games that handle these issues more effectively I’d say you should seek those out before taking this option.
