  • Provides enough story beats and creepiness to mostly compensate for its tendency to kill you somewhat abruptly

Ib is an odd sort of adventure where you play the part of a young girl who has gotten lost in a bizarre nightmarish version of an art gallery. You’ll have to explore, solve puzzles, occasionally run in terror… you know, things you do in your average game. There’s no doubt that the mood it sets with the odd art and the suitably themed music, though sometimes simply moving to silence which can be more unsettling, should be enough to put you a little on edge. Where the game loses me a bit is in the variety of odd things you’ll encounter that will just straight-up kill you. I suppose that’s good for a quick start, and typically you don’t lose much progress due to generous save points, but for me there’s also an element of cheapness to it that’s aggravating. That said, those quick scares and moments are also undoubtedly why the game is regarded by some as a sort of cult classic so it’s quite apparent that tastes can vary. You’ll just want to be sure which one you are as you contemplate a purchase.
