While there are better options out there, this cozy puzzler has a creative component on top of the puzzling which adds value
While the torrent of cozy games that have come to the Switch haven’t always been my favorite, I do understand and appreciate their value in helping to attract and retain a gaming audience that doesn’t align to the more traditional action-oriented crowd. Whether they happen to be younger, older, male, female, or just people who really love cats more than anything else in the world, the cozy gaming audience is out there chasing down titles that will help give them an experience with “feel good” vibes. In the case of Instants there doesn’t end up being too much to understand. Your task will be to continue to build memory albums for your friends and family, taking a collection of the pictures they’ve taken, organizing them, and then capturing them in a scrapbook. For the most part this is a pretty simple task, but that doesn’t necessarily make it less satisfying. Aside from visual cues in the pictures, you’ll sometimes need to turn them over to see comments that have been added to the back, and then the game also tried valiantly to use a color-coded arrow system to help clue you in on when things aren’t in the proper sequence. To cap it all off, if you’re feeling creative as well you’ll then have the opportunity to decorate your albums with a growing variety of stickers, ribbons, and more, giving the game an additional creative dimension that some people may really appreciate. In terms of the issues, the main one would likely be the fact that much of the time your tasks are relatively simple, and that can diminish the reward. In addition, there’s the fact that the Switch has another indie out there who tackles this kind of play with more flair and pizzazz called FRAMED Collection, that may be missing the scrapbooking element, but plays through with quite a bit more overall polish. If you’re a big cozy gaming fan, and enjoy reminiscing, this may be a great way to set off some positive memories from your own past, and though it may be a pretty simple title overall, that doesn’t make the obvious efforts put into it any less significant.
