A decent co-op you can play solo that mixes puzzles and action, but it breaks little in the way of new ground

As anyone who has been following this channel for a while now knows, I’m a big fan of co-op gaming in general, and I’ve been blessed to get to play a pretty wide variety of them over the last generation. These have ranged from traditional to quite silly, and true team efforts down to two-player affairs. On the budget end of the spectrum there have been a few action puzzlers like this one, and while they are pretty nice in their overall simplicity and often work well enough, I’ve also begun to be concerned they’re starting to feel stale.

The good news here is that Jelly & Toast at least provides a reasonably-good experience whether you’re playing with a partner, or are just determined to go it alone. It won’t take carefully-coordinated efforts, with both people moving at the same time, to get through each of the game’s stages. If you need to pause to switch characters, and then continue with the other, that works out just fine. It means that the overall action is a little more subdued, but it also makes solo play possible without trying to have you controlling each character with a different stick, which is doable but can get mentally taxing.

The problem is, I’ve played quite a few games in this same general vein now, including both Kinduo and its sequel, and while there are differences on a general level they do all feel somewhat similar. The good news is that if you love any of these, the others should also at least be a good bet to enjoy as well, even if perhaps there could be diminishing returns. The bad news is that if you’ve played quite a number of co-op games in this general style already, and are looking for something that stands out, this may not be as good a candidate.
