  • While as budget mobile ports go I’ve played worse, the sluggish pace and overly-simple play make it a bit of a snooze

So, Johnny Trigger. Yes, it absolutely feels like a mobile game without the need for a piece of dedicated hardware like the Switch. So we got the not-so-great news out of the way first. Trying to ignore that, I suppose for the right audience who isn’t as twitchy and seeking high-intensity action it may not be a bad match. The game pretty well exclusively consists of you moving through different scenes where Johnny will automatically leap into the air, flip around, and shoot or in some other way take out enemies while trying to avoid harming civilians. The tough part is that this all happens pretty slowly, and aside from simply not knowing where he’ll automatically begin aiming first, the tricky part is trying to account for rotation as you try to make careful use of your bullets to make critical shots. Periodic boss fights try to up the ante a bit but ultimately it’s just then a longer engagement since they will take more damage before going down. New outfits, weapons, scenarios, and means to kill are added with some regularity but don’t do much of anything to raise the bar of challenge or excitement. Somewhat worthwhile on the Switch, but it would feel just as at home on your phone since it has exceedingly simple controls and gameplay.
