If you're a fan of this franchise it will likely be just what you're looking for. If not, get ready for a helluva ride...
Hoo boy, there are times when you get to review games involving licenses you know nothing of and when you turn on the switch you just have no idea what you’re in for. All-Star Battle R is A LOT. I appreciate some crazy anime action and bizarre people yelling as they creatively beat the crap out of each other but this really takes it to another level once you get the hang of it. Unfortunately I’d say, for me, that’s the rub though. While most fighting games at least roughly fall into a limited number of camps for their overall flow and feel I struggled to get my arms around the scheme for Battle R. Throw in what are sometimes almost nonsensical attacks with terrible range assigned to some fighters core moves and it can also be a bit confounding when trying out a new fighter and trying to feel their attack zone. If you’re a fan of the series I have no doubt the over-the-top antics and insanity will have some appeal, but regardless be warned if you’re new to this series… there’s a learning curve to come with the entertainment.
