  • While it has some character and odd charm with its varied approaches to combat, Kofi Quest struggles to take off

If you’re in the mood for a game with some pretty unique gameplay sensibilities and a distinct sense of humor you may find Kofi Quest to your liking, just be warned that it isn’t all happy faces either. Working out as a sort of real-time strategy adventure in execution, you’ll encounter trouble with your motley crew of miscreant kids, requiring you to do battle. There are actually quite a number of ways you can let the combat play out, but I definitely found that being pretty active is a big help since your group isn’t terribly bright and will pretty often even engage in friendly fire. If you’re more of a tactician you can stop the action and tell your units where to go to engage and attack enemies, if you’re into more on-the-fly control you can cycle through people or even unit classes to give orders during the action, and then you can contribute your own small part to battle as well, or any combination of the above. I think in terms of the quality and clarity of what’s happening in your average battle the variety of options was likely a bit harmful, but I could see where folks who enjoy variety and improvising may like to mix it up. Most definitely it is the characters and the game’s sense of humor that will do the heavy lifting for enjoyment, so if the general style of play sounds like it could work for you be sure to check out some gameplay video to see if it fits your sense of humor.
