A mix of a gorgeous art style, teenage angst and love, and Japanese folklore
I’ll admit that mostly story-driven affairs tend to make me lose interest pretty quickly on a general level, but that said there are absolutely those that manage to grab me for a variety of reasons. Last Time I Saw You, aside from having a very attractive general look, also manages to be just odd enough, mixing together some teenage emotions, dealing with parents and friends… and then a variety of mythical creatures from Japanese folklore. Color me intrigued. What starts out as a series of dreams about some mystery woman ends up coming to a head somewhat when a typhoon hits the town, and in order to protect your character, the water spirit you’ve been dreaming about helps to protect you. What follows is a bit of an adventure, as you’ll explore a mysterious forest that had been closed off before, running into all manner of strange creatures who also tend to have a variety of engaging personalities.Just for some flavor, there can occasionally be a little action as well, whether doing some pretty simple platforming (not to say it can’t be tricky though), or having to whack away at evil spirits that are attacking you periodically. Considering these are just implemented well enough not to drag the rest of the experience down, they are nice for variety, but if you’re looking for something that doesn’t require a little more controller dexterity they may also be disqualifying. For the most part this just feels like a game that’s doing its own thing, telling its own story, and I can respect that. It isn’t particularly mind-blowing, but it is a nice change of pace and simply feels like something different, which can be nice once in a while.
