Undoubtedly pleasant and adhering to classic time management beats, but then there’s the curious matter of price
Having been a fan of the restaurant-style time management subgenre since the days of the likes of the original Diner Dash, I’ve been a bit surprised not to have seen more of them pop up on the Switch. That does make Lemon Cake a bit of a pleasant novelty, filling in that space nicely with a light story, a generally slow escalation of difficulty as you continue to progress, and simple enough action that it should be quite accessible to anyone. Where I find the rub comes in a bit is with the asking price, which simply feels steep compared to your typical game of this kind that isn’t terribly complex and satisfies a pretty niche taste. You could attempt to argue that the MSRP is reasonable due to its general level of quality, but fundamentally it really isn’t breaking any new ground and on mobile platforms there are an abundance of games in this style of comparable quality for half that price or less. If you’re a die hard fan of the subgenre it does help to fill the void in the space quite nicely, but if you’re able to tough it out until it’s on sale that would seem to be a better time to take the plunge.
