While a deckbuilder at its core, its sense of personality and general design give it a distinctive feel and flow in a crowded space
OK, don’t shoot the messenger, but yes, there’s yet another game that can roughly be called a roguelike deckbuilder on the eShop. Now that we’ve gotten the bad news out of the way, we can move onto the more positive note that comes with it. It’s pretty decent, and thankfully has a style of play that’s smart and sets itself apart! With gameplay taking place on the 3 by 3 grid, the game feels almost like a mix of a dungeon crawler and deckbuilder. You’ll need to work out what progression of cards you’ll need to use in order to procure gold to buy equipment, carefully buy the right cards to suit the current situation, and then use the right skills and weapons at the right time so they aren’t wasted, but also keep yourself alive. Once things get rolling, and you’ve got a few runs under your belt, the strategy behind this pretty inventive style begins to yield results, you’ll just need to carefully pay attention to every detail possible at key moments to ensure you’ve maximized your chances for survival. As is the case with almost all roguelike games of any kind, there’s absolutely a challenging edge here, as well as a bit of a learning curve. I’ll admit that initially the control scheme does little to help make things easier, as some of the button choices and the need to confirm many of your decisions slow things down somewhat needlessly. Success is really driven by understanding how different enemies operate, allowing you to make the right decisions early in a battle, minimizing your damage while chipping away carefully at the weaker enemies so you can buy some time and get better geared up for the bosses, who are typically a pain to take down after a short while. The thing is, with the exception of the interface not always giving you feedback for things like buttons not working in some contexts, in general this is a game looking to capture your attention with its art and overall style, and then keep you on the hook once that style of play clicks for you.
