While I respect the pretty accurate portrayal here of mental health challenges, it’s definitely a niche experience
Whenever you load up anything described as a visual novel you know it’s a ride that could take you just about anywhere, but somehow this manages to turn the mere act of going to the store for some milk into a full-blown experience. As someone who has close family who struggle with depression and some other mental health issues this actually hits pretty close to home though, as the seemingly ordinary becoming an ordeal is precisely what they can go through, feeling overwhelmed and easily getting sidetracked by anxiety. Of course, this ups the ante a bit, not merely being something you read through passively. At different points you do get the opportunity to intervene as a sort of voice in the character’s head, and this is where the game goes from being mildly interesting to a bit more unique and in some ways, depending on the direction you choose, a bit messed up as well. The results aren’t so much games as unusual experiences that you have some ability to influence, and then see how things can play out differently when you choose different options. It’s absolutely niche, but even though it definitely goes off the weird end a bit it still seems set on trying to make a point. Whether it succeeds I think will likely vary, but it’s at least an interesting attempt.
