While there’s only a somewhat limited amount of content, and the style of puzzling isn’t terribly original, for nostalgia heads it’s still a nice celebration of some NAMCO classics

When it comes to puzzle titles, while there are periodically games that come along and do something fresh and new, more often than not they have a tendency to repackage something already known, hoping to throw in some flair to help make it more appealing. Since in this case that happens to be everything being themed with classic NAMCO arcade touches, whether that’s the voxelized characters being used for your spheres, or classic music tracks and sound effects, anyone of a certain age will likely get sucked in by it pretty quickly.

It wasn’t so long ago that Suika Game arrived on the Switch, bringing its pretty simple but still challenging rules to the table. For those unfamiliar, the challenge is just to combine two balls (or in this case, spheres) of the same type to make one ball that represents the next type in line. Of course, you only have a limited amount of space to work with, so you’re going to need a fair amount of skill, luck, or more likely a little of both to keep things going without one of your spheres falling out of the play space. It’s a simple concept, for sure, but it’s also pretty easy to engage with more passively, and seeing an eruption of matches every once in a while is still rewarding.

Of course, there’s also no getting around the fact that in the end there’s not all that much here in terms of true variety. Yes, you’ll have the opportunity to unlock versions of the game for a few classic Namco classics which include Pac-Man, Dig Dug, Mappy, and two others, but that will just be a matter of time. From there, outside of trying to chase high score leaderboards, or just improve on your own personal best, it’s just a game you can sit and chill with. If the nostalgic beats have some appeal to you, this may be a great option, but otherwise in terms of the overall experience it’s roughly even with the other variations out in the eShop already.
