Featuring run ‘n gun foreground action with shooting in the background, Neon Inferno ups the ante for intense new wave arcade action

This last generation has been great for anyone who loves classic arcade games, witnessing multiple collections bringing them together, remakes to help introduce many to new genre fans, but also plenty of original ones as well. Some have been made in the mold of specific titles, or mixed together elements of a few different ones, but a few have really stretched to create experiences that feel both familiar and new.

First of all, the game looks spectacular, using scanlines to create a retro look but sporting gorgeous backgrounds and sprite work paired with some great animations. In terms of the action itself, it also absolutely has a grounding in the classic run ‘n gun style, channeling elements of that classic Contra feel. What sets it apart further though is simultaneously sporting a second background layer of enemies that you’ll need to engage in a style more akin to classics like Cabal. Throw in challenging boss fights and some stages that change up the action and this is a packed, but at times outright difficult, arcade redux.

Where the game may lose the more faint at heart begins with the control scheme, which understandably needs to be pretty complex given that you need to be able to address action in two different planes, typically all at once. Indeed, on the first run through most stages it will simply be an attempt to survive by any means necessary. Success takes time and comfort with the control scheme and the flow of action, keeping your eye on enemies about to light you up from the background while dealing with the ones coming at you from either side. You’ll quickly learn that the dodge isn’t just your friend, it’s the key to your survival, but I can absolutely see how some people won’t enjoy the overwhelming nature of the action at times. That said, there’s no doubt that it stands alone as an arcade title that feels familiar in multiple ways and offers up a challenge unlike anything else on the eShop.
