While offering a family-friendly alternative to its horror-inspired asymmetric cousins, there’s fun to be had here, but its future feels more shaky

Having played a number of asymmetric multiplayer games over the years, I’ve seen them vary from being quite complex to somewhat basic. While I think my favorites have tended to be first-person shooters under the hood, I do understand the collection of ones led by Dead by Daylight, that are instead more along the lines of participating in a horror movie. Featuring various deadly villains, ranging from new and creative to actual horror icons, you’re either playing the role of the killer or one of a handful of potential victims, trying to either slaughter the innocent or simply survive, depending on your role.

The thing is, considering this is all just a more elaborate version of the classic kids’ game of hide and seek, it isn’t hard to understand why someone would try to make a more toned down version running with the same idea, but in a format that’s far less gruesome. Enter OBAKEIDORO 2: Chase & Seek, which features a number of menacing but hardly sinister enemies whose job is to capture a group of kids before time runs out. While the level of intensity and the fear of being caught may be a little more toned down, at least for a while there’s still some fun to be had here.

The real question though is what sort of longevity the game can hope to have. The aforementioned Dead by Daylight is still pulling people in consistently, many years after release, but it has also added a wide variety of well-known killers from popular cinema over time to keep stoking the fires of interest. Even now, trying to find people to play with online, OBAKEIDORO 2 can feel a little hit or miss, and unfortunately for new players you’re likely to be playing alongside hard core veterans the vast majority of the time, so it can be a little intimidating. Now, given the fact that you can play locally with up to 3 friends, that would be your best bet to sustain enjoyment. If you’re instead reliant on finding randoms to play with, it’s far more likely to end up being a more uneven and potentially disappointing experience given the realities of online communities in the indie gaming space.
