While the concept of having dinos in a farm sim adventure has appeal, Paleo Pines struggles to deliver more than novelty
While the farming sim and life sim subgenres have been around for a bit the likes of Animal Crossing and Stardew Valley really helped to explode them both to greater popularity… but also greater expectations. There have been quite an assortment of indie titles on the Switch that have tried to capture aspects of both of those games to once again capture lightning in a bottle but that has proven to be quite a challenge, pretty well defeating all newcomers for the past few years. Paleo Pines is the latest to jump into this space, absolutely making a splash by including dinosaurs in the general mix, but unfortunately then fails to much further differentiate itself outside of that fact. Throw in fine controls for some tasks that can feel a bit fidgety and simply less overall depth of variety and things worth doing and coming back to over and over and its appeal tends to feel more fleeting. If you keep your expectations in check it’s a fine diversion, but it’s hard to say it’s much more with any confidence.
