  • Since I was always just a “Nintendo guy”, and never put my toe in the Sega pool, Panzer Dragoon was a game I always heard about as being highly revered but never checked out myself. With its remake arriving on Switch I’ve now had a chance to check it out, and it’s an interesting if dated gameplay experience, but I can’t help but feel like something was either lost in translation or an opportunity was sorely missed when it comes to the control scheme. The lack of any real guidance as you start out is no help at all, with you really just needing to experiment to figure out what you’re meant to be doing (the key is definitely charging your shots to enable highlighting masses of enemies at once), but that’s not quite it. Having to shift your view around with the D-Pad is cumbersome, especially when you’re in the middle of a battle with enemies coming from all sides, and without an ability to invert your Y axis I found aiming to be a challenge since I’d have preferred it set up the opposite way. The result is generally pretty and no doubt nostalgic for fans, but it also feels like it could have been much better with some added care.
