The kaiju are coming, and it’s up to you and Gypsy Danger to try to stop them
As a pretty big fan of the original movie, as well as the Netflix animated series, I was eager to jump into the world of Pacific Rim, even if only in pinball form. Without question, the first thing any fan of the franchise will notice is the figure of Gypsy Danger towering over the table from the top of the table, and the fact that it is pretty well animated helps it to be eye-catching, so it opens pretty strong. In terms of design, it goes in a more simplistic direction overall, featuring ramps and pass throughs on either side, and some more basic bumper-like functions in the middle with your mech. I’ll admit that the play in the middle isn’t terribly exciting for the most part, and I wish the mech suit was a bit better taken advantage of, but when you get in the zone it can make for some exciting moments as well with some nice animations. While I do wish the kaiju could be featured a bit more extensively since they would have added to the table’s flavor, I at least do appreciate its pretty no-nonsense layout. If you’re dialed in it doesn’t take too much to trigger a little multiball action, and with all of the voice samples and sounds to help you get into that kaiju-fighting groove it doesn’t lack in flavor. It may not be an amazing original table, but it does manage to at least be a compelling and enjoyable one.
