Keeping things pretty simple, and decidedly retro in feel, this plays out adequately, even if perhaps not terribly satisfyingly

Another day, another retro-riffic Switch release that’s out to appeal to those who yearn for simpler days and simpler experiences. In the case of Pokettohiro we’ve got what would be a moderately-good platforming adventure on the Gameboy Color perhaps. Out to save the world, and betrayed by your own brother, it would seem that the odds are stacked against you, but with some determination you can save the day… or something like that.

What follows is a fine, but still pretty rudimentary side-scrolling adventure, where you’ll need to make careful jumps and slash your way through enemies who get in your way. There’s not much in terms of originality here, but honestly it does play out as a whole lot of titles from that generation, just perhaps without quite as much charm. Perhaps it’s the modern gamer in me talking, but I was generally underwhelmed with the gameplay. Workable, yes, and plays well, but it’s also a bit thin on genuine excitement since everything is so appropriately quite simple, befitting the era.

That isn’t to say that there can’t be those who enjoy it. Retro heads who love modern incarnations that play like games from the past may well get a kick out of it. The skill required isn’t terribly high, and the challenges are thus generally moderate. If you’re just looking for something that will give you a kick of nostalgia to simply sit back and appreciate, it may do the trick.
