While it’s a pleasant platformer on a budget, it simply doesn’t stand out in any way in a crowded eShop on the Switch
Given the fact that a great deal of Nintendo’s core identity rests with a certain mustachioed plumber, it’s no surprise that the Switch eShop is loaded to the gills with platformers of all sorts. While there are obviously higher-end options out there, I’d say the majority that I’ve played over the years have been more budget-minded fare. What has been great to see is that affordability hasn’t always implied low quality, with plenty of budget-minded actioners providing a fair value for their price. Unfortunately, though Popotinho's Adventures isn’t awful by any means, it also isn’t really notable in any meaningful way.At a glance you could probably assume that the game will fail to impress, though I’d note that I’ve played some games with this sort of look that have made a better case for themselves than this. The first word that comes to mind is generic, and for the most part the game struggles to shed that as an accurate description throughout. In many regards, I’d say there’s almost a retro quality to the game’s simplistic nature, though the pretty uninspired stage designs and ultimately pretty limited variety you’ll encounter overall failed to clearly stand above titles made decades ago on far more limited hardware.Throw in controls that feel a bit floaty at best, and there’s not even a precision platformer aspect that could hope to generate excitement. You’ll come to terms with the game’s general feel more than master it, but honestly for the most part the level design doesn’t demand much in the way of accuracy anyway, so I suppose it’s a match. While you could argue this is at least an approachable budget platformer, which it is, there are simply too many far more refined and creative options in the eShop, even on a budget, to need to settle for this.
