With its inspirations clearly on its sleeve, this 3D platformer/shooter has some ambition but struggles with execution
Now, full disclosure, I know in some gamer circles admitting to not being a big Mega Man fan could be blasphemous, but since this title has clearly been inspired by that series in look and general feel it would be wrong to omit that detail. In my mind it’s roughly split down the middle between decent and not-so-great as a whole, but for people who love this style of play it certainly may still be a win. One definite issue is that the game struggles with having an identity of its own, having borrowed liberally visually and in terms of play, and simply not feeling like the developers set out with enough ambition to do things their own distinctive way. The other issue, at least in my mind, relates to the mixture of the controls and the construction of the levels. I understand that part of the challenge of the game is the expectation that you’ll be able to walk and chew gum at the same time, or in this case make tricky platforming jumps while trying to engage and shoot down enemies. Perhaps the pretty frequent awkwardness of managing to do both is the intention to make people work for their success, but in terms of the visual sense of depth perception and quickly being able to feel where you are in space I think the deck is stacked a bit more than it should be against the player. All that said, if you’re down for a specific experience that there isn’t all that much of on the Switch, this will still probably be a bit of a win.
