For competitive puzzle action fans, the combining of these 2 iconic franchises is still a treat, but people who already have earlier versions may not get enough value out of the upgrade
Given the fact that my wife and I have been playing Tetris against each other in some way for a few decades now, both in its original form as well as many of its iterations over the years, the original Puyo Puyo Tetris was a great bit of fun on the Switch. While we weren’t as familiar and comfortable with Puyo Puyo, we were able to latch onto it quickly enough to start getting competitive with it as well, and when you combined them that made for a surprising blast of fun.I’ll admit that when Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 arrived, we were a bit more busy at the time, and the new modes and features didn’t quite feel like they warranted a deeper look. Now, with the Switch 2 enhanced version floating around with 2S we’re happy that we’ve returned to the series, but if you already have one of these titles you’ll want to look very carefully at the fine print for whether or not it will be worth your while. Now, if you have yet to take the plunge on this series, there’s a lot to dig into and enjoy. If you’re working solo you can explore the pretty lengthy Adventure mode, testing yourself at every step, or you could certainly tackle competitive matches against some bots or online in a slew of different modes, most of which are a blast. Whether you’re wanting to stick with only one style of play, alternate between screens for some added strategic fun, or simply fuse them both into one puzzle, Sega has covered pretty well every base you could imagine. If you happen to have already picked up one of the previous iterations of this series though, while the Switch 2 has some cool new additions, they’re not guaranteed to be of interest to everyone. The new Doubles mode is absolutely different, and undoubtedly challenging, as you’ll share a puzzle board with your partner, needing to carefully work strategy together on the fly. The difficulty is the fact that your pieces will block one another, really forcing coordination to another level, especially when you’re running out of space. If you happen to have friends or family you like to play with who also have their own Switches, the ability to use Gameshare to allow them to play on their own console with you hosting is also a great option that beats sharing a screen. Finally, if you’ve been dying to try out the mouse controller functionality, that’s supported as well, though I’m still not sure precisely how they think most people will use it effectively sitting on their couch in front of a TV.In the end, the value proposition here varies pretty wildly depending on your circumstances and whether or not you already have one of the Puyo Puyo Tetris titles. If you don’t, aside from picking up one of the others on a sale, in theory starting with the most current and full-featured version may not be a bad idea, since to the uninitiated, this is a game loaded with ways to satisfy your action puzzle itch. If you do though, you’ll want to very carefully consider whether you will personally benefit from the upgrade, and what it’s worth to you. This is an outstanding package, without a doubt, but it absolutely won’t be for everyone, even possibly Tetris fans.
