Another variation on the Suika Game formula, but this one doesn’t quite click as well as some others
At this point, having seen a few variations of the pretty basic-but-somewhat-addicting Suika Game formula, when nothing of substance is being added to the mix it’s getting harder to get excited. While it’s quite simple, it can make for some fun, but for anyone coming to the party this late they’ll need to bring something new and meaningful to get any traction. PuzzMix, sadly, does very little to set itself apart, though I suppose if you’re just looking for a different look and vibe it could be enough to get your attention. For those unfamiliar, the general style of play is that you’ll drop pieces of varying sizes into a box area, with ones that match each other combining when they touch into whatever is the next size up. As you move further along you’ll be trying to manage larger and larger pieces, working to fill in the gaps, until you run out of space. In the case of Bomb Cat, the addition of specific pieces that could be triggered to explode did add some spice and unpredictability to the formula, but PuzzMix has opted to essentially just reskin everything and include a variety of songs that can be unlocked as you continue to play. The thing is, aside from the pieces in PuzzMix having more jagged edges to them, sometimes making it harder for them to move around, very little has been done to alter or improve on the base experience already offered by others. I suppose having different tracks to listen to while you play could perhaps have some appeal, or the aesthetics overall could be more pleasing, but outside of that it’s all the same experience, and if anything I’d say it’s slightly worse due to the jagged edges on everything. Perhaps if you have yet to take the plunge in this style of casual action puzzling, you could go this route, but it really fails to stand out in any meaningful way.
