  • While it has an accessible look and feel for gamers of all ages and levels, it’s lack of ambition makes it a tough sell

There’s something simple and pure about Ratyboy that, at some level, does have some appeal. Built pretty much completely around simply exploring over-sized (you do play as a mouse/rat) spaces and looking for collectables, it is absolutely something probably anyone could play and possibly enjoy. The issue is more that there’s really nothing more than that. There’s no hook to give the game some oomph to make it a bit more compelling, just generally being put into a new room of a house and looking to collect the cheese and stars placed in specific areas you’ll need to get to. The thing is, since it is geared towards being simpler I was a bit let down that it makes no effort to help the player know things like that you can grab ledges or other simple mechanical things that less experienced gamers could probably use some assistance with. It has a simple charm, but aside from very inexperienced gamers who wouldn’t know any better it’s hard to imagine an audience getting much out of it.
