Roughly an attempt to recreate the OG Super Mario Kart experience, it mostly succeeds but fails to impress
As a programmer I suppose I can see the allure of setting a target to test your skills and working to meet it, and in the gaming space I suppose a reward of that effort can be selling what you’ve made. Retro Kart Rush feels just like that, with someone deciding that the classic Super Mario Kart would be a great challenge to try to recreate as fully as possible in terms of play on a modern system. I suppose in that light Rush is at least a decent effort, as there’s no denying the inspiration of most aspects of how it plays. That said, the obvious lack of Nintendo’s characters and signature charm illustrates to some degree how bland the play experience would have been back then without those elements adding interest. While not a perfect translation mechanically many elements are there, but even if they’d been replicated to a tee I think the experience would still have suffered as there’s just no getting around the blandness of play, especially when there are more worthy indie racers out there to enjoy.
