While it has a bit of old-school flair, this doesn’t stand shoulder to shoulder with far more refined titles in the space
Skautfold: Ursurper can’t necessarily be criticized with complaints about it not earnestly trying to be interesting. It certainly has a unique style, a somewhat unusual protagonist and story, and combat mechanics that deviate from the norm with an often-aggressive combat style. The problem is that despite those valiant attempts to help the game stand out in the genre space it just comes up a bit short. There’s no doubt that we’ve been spoiled with a pretty wide array of great slashing action games, whether Metroidvanias or otherwise, and the different weapons you’ll find may be novel initially but over time the combat is too often a bit inconsistent and bland. You’ll have periodic challenges, for sure, but more often than not you’ll face the same sorts of enemies with a lather, rinse, and repeat sort of feel to the dispatching of them. I suppose for the price you could make an argument that it’s not a bad return on your investment, but there are simply too many better games out there to enjoy in the space to give this a recommendation.
