While it has an obvious sense of style, and the turn-based battles generally bring some excitement, it isn’t without issues
When I reflect on SOULVARS the first thing that comes to mind is that it got off to an odd start, really feeling like I’d been dropped a few hours into an active game. Without a great deal of background on the story, what’s going on, or what you’re really meant to be doing you’re just right in the middle of things. I suppose some could consider that a bit refreshing, but for me it was just very weird and it threw me off quite a bit. There’s no question that the general look of the combat, enemies, and attacks have visual flair, which absolutely give it some appeal. The thing is, unless you’re looking to invest in essentially researching the story, looking through in-game docs and lore, and take the time to simply work out the many nuances of the way your combat option actually work, you’re going to be pretty lost. You can absolutely stumble through and have some fun, but that does have an effect on how the overall experience plays out. It’s pretty and stylish, for sure, but there are absolutely more well-rounded options out there for RPG fans.
