A wonderful surprise of a game that takes run-n-gun shooting in a new more frantic direction

Since the long-past days that I first enjoyed Contra in the arcades and on the NES, the run-n-gun subgenre has given me many hours of fun. That said, even with recent games like Iron Meat and others that have absolutely demonstrated how to amp up the action, variety, and intensity further, you normally don’t see much in the way of changing the way games in this space are played. Speedollama takes some great steps to change that.

At its base, Speedollama follows the pretty familiar stock formula, but did I mention that the game is also quite violent and silly? You’ll be running around, guns blazing, shooting up every alpaca in sight, reducing them to bloody flesh. But what sets the game apart a bit is the timer. You see, there are blue crystals strewn about the procedurally-generated levels, and you’ll need to collect the majority of them in order to open the door to the exit. The challenge is that if you can’t get the door open and through it before time runs out it’s game over. This dynamic will absolutely change your approach, and makes the overall challenge feel fresh.

The first thing you’ll need to do to help yourself out is understand which of the 3 base llama characters you’ll want to work with, placing value in firepower, speed, jumping height, health, or something more in the middle for each. While I found that favoring speed was a wise choice, with some early success with a slower llama you could always turn around and purchase a speed boost to compensate, the choice is up to you. Thankfully, you will get mostly used to the layout of the elements the procedural levels will utilize, as that can save you some time, but if you’re not diligent about keeping an eye on the map and the layout of the stages you can quickly get yourself in trouble. Now throw in progressively tougher enemies and some tricky but silly boss fights and you have a formula that feels fresh, and with its budget price, will hopefully find success.
