While by no means revolutionizing the classic Match-3 style, there’s nothing wrong with a variation on a theme
Having played and generally enjoyed a wide variety of Match-3 titles over the years, ranging from stock and simple to elevated in various ways, I’d fairly say I’m a fan of the genre. In general I’d say that the Puzzle Quest series, and others that adopted its RPG-like structure are probably the most engrossing I’ve played, but in general I appreciate anything that shoots to add some value and variety to the mix. The good news is that SpelunKing does just that, not just keeping a static board in place and having you endlessly match, create power-ups, and clear gems (or whatever any given game would have you working with). Instead, down in your mines, you’ll be challenged to do some exploring, essentially finding matches in the direction you want to go, and that will present you with a variety of tasks and added challenges. Whether it be move-constrained puzzles or needing to find an object to activate or unlock another, while you may go through similar motions there are consistently small surprises as you go. Adding more dimension is a town up top that you’ll be able to slowly unlock and then improve as well, further encouraging you to invest your time and efforts in sticking with things to see what may come next. While ultimately it’s still mostly a lot of Match-3 style play, there’s some added loving effort here casual and puzzle fans should appreciate.
