Reviews:
  • Imagine if you took a relatively simple 8-bit tennis game and then infused it with some unique characters and a fair amount of technique. The result would likely end up being Spiritsphere DX. In its normal mode you and an opponent will try to get a sphere (ball) past one another on a variety of themed courts. Each competitor has their own feel and moves so the great news is you’ll probably be able to find one that suits your style. They range from relatively quick and straightforward to slower and more powerful and each tends to have a bit of personality to boot. Working with both standard and charged attacks and a dash you can get things rolling and then when you’re comfortable you can begin to experiment with things like putting a spin on the ball as well. To keep things from getting too dull the game fortunately offers up a variety of modes that play quite differently. Highlights include a squash variant where both players occupy the same space, providing an opportunity for you messing with each other, and a mode where you can team up against a boss. There are even some variants for more than 2 players as well if you have additional people available to boot. Single-player is doable but it really takes all of the steam out of the experience, which is really best shared with a friend. Aside from that fact that this is very much a multiplayer-first title when it comes to enjoyment probably the biggest weakness is its aggravating unlock system. Through the course of playing you will earn coins that you can then use to unlock more characters, stages, ball types, etc. You’ll use these coins to throw into a fountain 100 at a time and essentially roll the dice on what you get. In a game like this unlocking new characters can be absolutely vital to helping people find a style that suits them leaving character unlocks to chance seems unwise and risks people losing interest before they’ve even found their ideal match. The rest I suppose make sense but tying character unlocks in is aggravating for people who are just trying to get a taste of everything the game has to offer from a play style perspective. As a whole SpiritSphere DX puts a unique spin on a very classic game. The varied character play styles and modes offer up some great options for some light and fun competition (or cooperation) with a friend. That said, there’s no ignoring that the best way to experience the game is with another person and grinding the single-player mode really removes the majority of the magic of the experience. Throw on the somewhat aggravating method of unlocking all of the game’s characters and the game unfortunately gets in its own way a bit. If you’ve got people to play against with some regularity and are looking for a good pick-up-and-play (with Hand2Hand mode quite literally) game to enjoy anywhere SpiritSphere DX has its charms.
