A tight and generally pretty smart take on the dodge-em-up that manages to impress at its pretty humble budget price
Given my old-school arcade skills for inherently being able to process a great deal of input at once and react to it pretty instinctively, the relatively new subgenre on the block, the dodge-em-up, has become a bit of a favorite of mine. Seeing patterns emerge, even when there is no set pattern, and then knowing where to put yourself to be safe is a real skill and pretty quickly Steel Defier will demand that you try to leverage it. The thing is, it will just keep throwing more at you to up the ante, adding more and more hazards that will kill you and that you need to contend with in order to move quickly around an enclosed room collecting enough key cards to move on. With some latitude to choose your path in key places you can try to cut things more short or simply buckle in to go the long-er way, usually being rewarded with a new ability that will typically make things a bit easier. The thing is, given the relatively short length of the game I'd say skipping and stages is simply missing out on the full experience. Depending on your tastes, and inherent dodging ability, this will either be a lot of fun or a miss, but it’s pretty easy to root for this low-budget challenge.
