Despite its more humble looks, solid controls and smart design make it a great budget action game to roll with
Having poked around with the FUSE platform for Switch, and seen its power to enable users to outright program/build games themselves, I’m excited to see a title developed in FUSE arriving on Switch as a full release. If you’re familiar with the classic Super Monkey Ball series you’ll likely find its style of play quite familiar, though certainly its presentation is a step down from the cartoony cuteness of that franchise. The thing is, perhaps even moreso than some of the more recent iterations of the Monkey Ball machine, I’d say that mechanically Super Funky Bowling absolutely shines. The controls, which have you shifting the stage itself to compel your ball to roll where you want it, are tight, feel about right in terms of their analog sensitivity, and they work admirably. Stage design, while lacking in the bells and whistles and looking more utilitarian, is also quite good, providing a nice progression of elements as you advance in stages and keeping the degree of challenge noticeable but still consistently fair. For the very humble asking price the game may not be a looker, but it delivers where it counts and if you’ve got that Monkey Ball itch that Sega has been spotty scratching for the past decade or so this may be just what you’re looking for.
