The OG reality show has come to Switch, but while there’s some novelty the gameplay is pretty weak overall
As someone who watched Survivor for a few seasons way back when it got started, while I haven’t stuck with the show over time I do at least have some understanding of its appeal. In many ways I’m surprised that it has taken this long for a game using the license to come along to try to recreate some aspects of that experience on Switch. That said, now that it’s here… it could have used some more time to get a bit more interesting. Yes, for the most part there’s a stab here at pulling you into the various aspects of play, whether that’s searching the island for immunity idols, food, or other resources for camp, plotting with your fellow team members, or participating in mini game-esque challenges. So the game deserves credit for really not leaving anything out. The thing is, none of it is particularly great or memorable either. Resource collection simply involves some timed button presses or other simple actions. The mini games vary in quality and level of interest but pretty quickly become just something to endure more than enjoy. Trying to manage relationships with others is generally just aggravating as you don’t always have the choices in talking to them you may prefer, everyone tends to feel a bit random and fickle, and it just doesn’t feel very interesting. You could choose to play with friends, but then you’re likely to just end up sharing in the misery.
