Persistent clipping and bugginess stack onto meandering but generally aimless play in this relatively pretty adventure
Having played a number of what I’d call wildlife adventures of various kinds, ranging from more action-oriented to more survival-oriented (and some falling between them), I’d say it’s been firmly established that they can be made the right way and can be compelling. Unfortunately, The Companion generally doesn’t feel like it got that memo. While I’ve played worse, the lack of very clear direction, the general bugginess of the experience, and attempts at story beats that didn’t draw me in at all didn’t make for much of an impression. In many ways it simply feels like an alpha or beta version, with most of the gameplay systems in place but lacking the clarity and polish you’d expect before being sent off into the wild of the eShop.
