While the premise is momentarily amusing, the lack of depth and direction in surviving are aggravating

Among the types of games I’ve tended to enjoy the most on Switch have been ones that would qualify as weird. Not necessarily belonging to any given genre, whether through the use of humor, odd gameplay, or other devices, I enjoy surprises and ideas that are a bit off-center. All that said, in the end no matter how amusing or bizarre the premise may be, we’re still talking about games, so the gameplay needs to deliver. That’s where my concerns with The Godfeather lie.

Starting with what’s positive, if you’ve got a sense of humor that is amused by scatalogical elements, The Godfeather attempts to have you covered… or at least all of your targets covered. Yes, a big piece of the gaming puzzle here is flying over the town, spotting your targets, and then letting your liquid artillery splatter all over them. As you have successes you’ll be given further missions, and you’ll collect crumbs and special branches that you’ll be able to use as currency to buy special outfits and make more permanent upgrades respectively.

Where I had problems first dealt with getting some proper direction on what you’re meant to be doing, what little techniques and moves you’ll have to work with, and how to deal with your ongoing concerns. In-game windows popped up pretty quickly to give some basic tips, but especially when dealing with adversaries like flocks of other birds or the dreaded police drones I didn’t feel like you were given much to work with, resulting in some needless frustrations trying to divine how to deal with them since your radius of vision isn’t all that wide and it was entirely too easy for a drone to pop in and capture you before you really saw it. Throw in the general repetition of the gameplay once the core joke had worn off, and it didn’t take long for The Godfeather to simply feel all pooped out entirely too quickly.
